This corporal with the 12th West Virginia Infantry served with "conspicuous gallantry" as a color bearer during the assault on Fort Gregg at Petersburg, Virginia, on 2 April 1865. He had previously served in Company G, 155th Ohio Volunteers.

He was born in Pennsylvania in 1840, lived 10 years of his postwar life in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and died in Rochester, Pennsylvania, in 1909.
