This native of Quiet Dell (Marion County), while serving as a corporal with the 3rd Marine Corps, continually attacked Japanese machine gun batteries on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands with a flamethrower on 23 February 1945.
A bridge in Barboursville is named in his honor. Prior to his death in 2022, he was the last surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient.
