This resident of Rhoda (Mineral County) before World War II, while serving as a staff sergeant with the 311th Infantry, 78th Infantry Division, was shot and killed in battle at Kesternich, Germany, on 31 January 1945. Over the previous two days, he had been wounded seriously twice while leading his troops into battle.
