Ohio County native William "Billy" Dixon earned the Medal of Honor at the Battle of Buffalo Wallow, sometimes called the Buffalo Wallow Fight, while defending his community of Adobe Walls, Texas, from an attack by 700-1,200 Indians.

He is one of only eight civilians to be awarded the medal. In 1916-17, his medal was revoked because of his civilian status, but it was reinstated in 1989 by the Army Board of Correction of Records.

He was born in 1850 and died in 1913 in Oklahoma.
