Martini grew up in Frankford, Greenbrier County, and Charleston. While serving as a private with the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, saved the life of a wounded soldier after being fatally wounded himself near Binh Son, Vietnam, on 21 April 1967.
