This East Gulf (Raleigh County) native, while serving as a sergeant with the 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Army Infantry Division, was killed while leading his troops up Hill 543 near Chipo-ri, Korea, on 1 June 1952. A bridge on I-77 in Mercer County is named in his honor.
