Entering the service at Mason City (Mason County), this chief bugler for the 1st West Virginia Cavalry captured the battle flag of the Sumter Flying Artillery (CSA) at Appomattox Station, Virginia, on 8 April 1865.

He was born in 1842 in Germany and died in 1915 in Sassafras (Mason County), although some sources cite his death as occurring in Pomeroy, Ohio, where he is buried.
