This Mason County native, while serving as a 1st sergeant in the 22nd Iowa Infantry, was severely wounded while leading troops to the parapet of Confederate works at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on 22 May 1863.

He was born in 1836. After the war, he moved back to Iowa, where he died 23 May 1904. He is buried in Ottumwa Cemetery in Iowa.
