This Marshall County native, while serving as a sergeant with the 7th U.S. Cavalry, led troops against Sioux Indians and rescued the body of a lieutenant at the Battle of Little Big Horn, Montana, on 25 June 1876.

He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1878. He was born in 1849 in Cameron and died in 1921 in Oklahoma.
